British Royal Navy Dress Saber with Pipe-Back Blade

SKU#: US-S173
MSRP:$254.96
Price: $244.96

The British Royal Navy Officer sword pattern was set down in 1827 and—remarkably—continues in use today. While the hilt form stayed largely consistent over time, the blade profile evolved: the early Navy officers carried the distinctive Pipe-Back blade, later replaced by the modern Wilkinson-style blade.

Offered here is the classic Pipe-Back version, recognized by the raised “piping” ridge running along the spine into the widened foible near the tip. This structural ridge was intended to add rigidity for thrusts and reinforce strength for cutting. The blade on this reproduction is unsharpened and tempered high carbon steel, heavily etched with naval motifs and bearing the historic Prosser maker’s markings associated with Charing Cross, London.

The brass hilt showcases the iconic fouled anchor design and a proud lion pommel—a style famously associated with Admiral Nelson’s own sword. A faux textured rayskin grip is wrapped with brass wire, and the scabbard is black leather with brass throat and chape, plus two suspension rings for proper wear. A fitted leather washer helps protect the guard from scabbard throat contact.

If you want the unmistakable look of an early Royal Navy officer’s saber—complete with the iconic fouled-anchor hilt and the historically distinctive Pipe-Back blade—this reproduction delivers a standout blend of tradition, detail, and presence. From the etched naval motifs to the brass-mounted leather scabbard, it’s an excellent choice for collectors, naval-history displays, ceremonial costuming, and period reenactment impressions.

The Royal Navy’s 1827 pattern officer’s sword became an enduring symbol of naval rank and tradition. Early examples commonly featured the Pipe-Back blade, a transitional design intended to balance thrusting rigidity with cutting capability. By the mid-19th century (around 1845), the Navy moved away from the Pipe-Back profile toward later blade forms, making original Pipe-Back examples especially recognizable to collectors and reenactors for their distinctive spine ridge and widened false edge near the tip.
