The sallet rose to prominence in the mid-15th century across the Holy Roman Empire, Italy, and Burgundy. German “Gothic” styles—recognized by their ridged crowns, pronounced brow lines, and elongated neck lames—offered excellent glancing surfaces against cuts and thrusts. Often paired with a bevor, sallets were worn by knights and professional men-at-arms throughout the later Hundred Years’ War and into the early Renaissance.
