The Falchion was a heavy single edged cutting sword that was used throughout the Middle Ages as an effective battle sword. This example from around 1530 defers from earlier types in as much as the blade is not as wide and comes to an effective stabbing point. Styled after the type of sword in common use in the many wars between France and the Italian City States as France tried to dominate the lucrative Italian trading networks, this type could also be seen in use through out most of Northern Europe.
The steel "S" shape guard has an elongated back arm to help to protect the hand and wrist from a blow while the pommel balances it nicely. The grip is wrapped with cord and covered in rich black leather and the sword is peened together like the originals.
