Bayonets

A bayonet is a blade that can be attached to the muzzle of a rifle or musket. Originally the bayonet was designed to convert an infantryman's musket into a pike. During the 17th century the musketeers would require a line of pikemen to protect them while they reloaded their muskets. After the invention of the Bayonet, musketeers would then be able to protect themselves as they now had in effect a pole weapon. Since that time soldiers have been trained to use their bayonets against cavalry units and other infantry units well into the modern century. During the 20th century the Bayonet has been shortened to allow the bayonet to be used as a general purpose military knife.

Our Springfield Bayonet is a socket bayonet which was an improvement over the earlier plug bayonets. Socket Bayonets were made with a socket that fitted over the barrel of the musket and had a slot which slid past the fore sight. The Springfield Bayonet is a later period bayonet that has a locking catch. The blade is offset to one side allowing the soldier to load the musket.

Our high quality Springfield Bayonet is a replica of the Enfield Bayonet that was used during the US Civil War. The bayonet blade is made from hand forged high carbon tempered steel. Includes a black leather sheath with brass fittings.
