Highly Accurate Reproduction Coins

Our replicas of historic coins cover a broad range of dates and will satisfy the needs of living history groups, retailers, and collectors. Our mint produces a range of semi-replica hammered coins that really do look and feel authentic. Weights, alloys, and fineness are kept close to the original remedies, and coins can be supplied as new or in a gently toned and aged condition. Original coins are carefully analyzed to determine engraving techniques and over 35 years experience is used to recreate the dies in fine detail. Our mint acts as a real period mint with its own mintmark, issuing coins under its own name.

There has long been a controversy over replicas with this degree of accuracy. Are they replicas or forgeries? Our mint, in an effort to answer this, has offered a reasonable compromise. In addition to issuing coins under their own nationally recognized mintmark, they also alter the legend slightly to distinguish these coins for what they are. Additionally, an example of each of these replicas is held by the British Museum for reference.

Ref: BI-150
Circa 1625-1649 Copper Royal Farthing ** Made from Copper.

Copper farthings had been struck and issued privately under licence during the preceding reign of James I. The king would grant a license or patent to an individual in return for a fee. The individual could then make considerable profits from producing and exchanging or selling the coins. This came about because there had been a serious shortage of small change for a considerable period of time.

Obverse: A pair of crossed scepters passing through a crown or diadem. CARO D G MAG BRI

Reverse: A crown above a crude harp with a bird-like head. The original reverse inscription, continued from the obverse, would have read: FRA ET HIB REX

Aethelred II

Ref: BI-240
Circa 978-1016 A.D. Saxon Silver Penny, Longcross type *** Made from sterling silver.

Ethelred II is famously known as "the unready". This is usually believed to mean that he was unprepared, but actually it is from the Anglo-Saxon "UNREDE" meaning "without counsel", that is without good advice. Ethelred reigned from 978 to 1016, and was one of the last Anglo Saxon kings.

Obverse Portrait of Ethelred facing left. EDELRED REX ANGLO

Reverse The very first "long cross" design, with inscription usually bearing the name of the moneyer or mint. The cross on the reverse side became used for splitting the coin into two halves or four quarters, to provide small change in the form, literally, of halfpence and farthings.

Roman and Medieval Coin Sets

Roman Coin Sets

The Romans invaded Britain in 43AD when about 40,000 troops crossed the channel under the command of Aulus Plautius. Claudius himself arrived in Britain to take command of the later stages of the campaign and earn an official triumph.

Double-sided coins reproduced from originals in the Ashmolean Museum, Verulamium Museum, Museum of London and The Grosvenor Museum. The sets depict the Roman occupation of Britain and include full historical details. Coins are marked to identify them as reproductions.
