The Lochaber Pole Axe was a Scottish war Axe that came into use around 1600. The name of the polearm derives from Lochaber, an area in the Scottish Highlands. This polearm was used mainly by Scottish highlanders and so it became known as the Lochaber Axe. The axe itself like many other medieval pole arms are similar to farming tools used for crops, such as the scythe, which is designed for reaping. The hook on the back resembles a smaller hook that may have been used to lift and carry tied bundles of a harvested crop. It is possible, then, that Lochaber axes, like the billhook, served a dual purpose as both arms and farming tools. Our Lochaber Axe is made from high carbon steel and attached to a hardwood (Sisau) shaft.
